BURNOUT AND INFERTILITY

Burnout is what happens when you reach a state of emotional, physical, or mental exhaustion and push yourself to keep going. And it wreaks havoc on your hormones

A chronic stress state like that tells the body that it is not safe to reproduce. This leads to oligoovulation or anovulation, which means you ovulate irregularly or not at all. It is 100% IMPOSSIBLE to get pregnant if you don’t ovulate.

HOW COMMON IS INFERTILITY WITH BURNOUT?

A 2016 survey in the Journal of Women’s Health found that 1 in 4 female physicians trying to conceive were diagnosed with infertility. As a recovering perfectionist, type-a, go-getter, wild woman, I spent many years dealing with burnout and the impact it has on the body.

It reached its peak in 2015 when I was mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted by school, work, interning, social obligations, family obligations, and working out too intensely. My mind body connection was shot due to my hustle/perfectionist/do all the things nature. I was dealing with estrogen dominance, short luteal phases, migraines, and GI issues. Had I wanted to get pregnant at that time, I’m not sure it would have been an option for me.

The exhaustion, pain, intense mood swings, the feeling of flatness… I couldn't keep ignoring what my body was telling me. So, I decided to quit taking hormonal birth control, start therapy for my anxiety, set some boundaries, nourish my body with adequate nutrition, and swap out my daily HIIT for more restorative movement.

In 2020, I conceived naturally and I am now mother to a blue eyed, wild child, but that journey started LONG before I was ready to have a kid.
